One size, and it genuinely does fit most people.

The short version

Fits most adult feet. The foot is knitted with enough stretch to cover a wide range, and the cuff is ribbed so it grips without cutting in.

Where the cuff sits

Mid-calf. That's deliberate — the boot shape needs height to read properly, so a low ankle sock would lose the whole effect. On most people the cream or brown cuff lands just below the widest part of the calf. On taller legs it sits a little lower, which looks just as good.

With trainers or loafers, the full boot shaft shows above the shoe. With a rolled trouser cuff or cropped jeans, you get the top of the boot and the pull tab — which is the shot everyone takes a photo of.

Who they suit less well

Being straight with you: if you have a very large foot or a particularly wide calf, a one-size sock will sit lower on the leg and feel snugger than it does in the photos. It still wears fine, but the shaft won't stand as tall. If you're unsure, ask us before you order rather than after.

What they're made of

A soft combed-cotton blend with a cushioned sole. The cushioning sits underfoot, which is what makes these wearable for a full day rather than for one photograph.

The boot pattern is knitted in — separate colored yarns worked into the sock, not a print laid on top. You'll see the design mirrored on the inside. It can't crack or peel, and it won't wash out.

Washing them

Machine wash cold, tumble dry low, no bleach. Turn inside out to keep the design sharp.

• Turning them inside out protects the raised pattern from rubbing in the drum.
• Cold water keeps the darker yarns from bleeding into the cream cuff on the first few washes.
• Skip the fabric softener — it flattens the cushioning over time.
• Air drying is kinder still if you have the patience for it.
